The Sega Chihiro is an arcade system produced by Sega in 2003. The Microsoft XBOX is based on the Chihiro design, but the Chihiro supports up to 1GB of RAM and uses GD-ROM media instead of DVDs. Because of the similar hardware, it is in theory relatively easy to port Chihiro games to the Xbox and PC.
There was also a Satellite Terminal version of the Chihiro. The network board is 100% the same as the one in the Triforce v3 with the same firmware also. The system requires one of the various Sega JVS I/O boards to operate.
Hardware Specifications
- CPU: Intel Pentium III 733MHz (133MHz FSB)
- Graphics: Nvidia XChip 200MHz (based on the Nvidia GeForce 3)
- RAM: Upgradable module, from 128MB upwards
- Polygons: 125M polys/sec
Changing Region
If you have a netboot PIC, plug that in and power up with it.
- Enter the test menu (push the test button)
- Go to the System Information menu.
- Press the Service button 30 times in a row and a hidden menu will appear to change the region.
- Once the region is changed, exit from the menus and after the Chihiro reboots, power off the system and power on again.
Type 1 Chihiro uses the Naomi style DIMM board that plugs in to the top of the unit. This version isn't compatible with as many games as Type 3 and I think there are two games that ONLY play on this version - Crazy Taxi High Roller and House of the Dead 3. I know for sure CTHR as I have this game.
Type 3 Chihiro has a built in DIMM and looks like a cube (they come with either 512MB or 1GB). It's the most common version and is able to run pretty much all games except the two noted above.
I'm pretty sure 512MB is the minimum for both boards and not sure it's worth upgrading to 1GB as very few games take advantage of the extra capacity.
One other thing I know is that while OutRun2 will run on both versions (Type 1 without link system), OutRun2 SP runs on Type 3 only.
Common Fixes
Check the memory capacitors on the Xbox motherboard. There should be either 3 or 5 (depending on revision) 3300uf 6.3v caps around the CPU that will often need to be replaced. This is very common and will often be the only thing keeping the board from working!
The fans are also known for dying, causing the Xbox GPU to overheat and cause the BGA solder under the GPU to crack. Reflowing the solder under the chip will usually fix this. This is the same problem the Xbox 360 commonly has, so if you aren't comfortable with BGA rework you can usually find someone locally who will fix it for under $50. Make sure you replace the fans too.
Making an AVIP cable
The AVIP cable is a small pass-through cable that connects the audio and video output of the Xbox motherboard to the Sega baseboard. This cable is REQUIRED for the board to boot, otherwise it will FRAG (Flashing Red And Green Lights), just like a retail Xbox will with no AV cables connected. Often when purchasing a second-hand Chihiro unit, it will be missing this cable, and replacements are of limited supply. To make this cable, you only need a few parts:
- Any Xbox AV cable
- 3M MDR 10126-3000PE connector
- 3M 10326-3210-000 housing (optional)
- some thin-gauge wire
Then, get your soldering iron and connect the terminals as such:
