Shippu Mahou Daisakusen: Kingdom Grandprix (疾風魔法大作戦キングダム-グランドプリ), also known as Kingdom Grandprix, is a shooter/racing hybrid arcade game developed by Raizing and published by 8ing. Released in September 1994, it is the second game of the Mahou Daisakusen series, after the original Mahou Daisakusen. Like many Raizing games of the time, it was afforded a Japanese release as well as a separate World release, encompassing Europe, the United States, China, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and Korea. The game is unique for incorporating a racing element into the traditional shooter template.

Story

A time when magic and machines ruled the country. Disputes continued without a sign of seize fire, among the remaining evil even after a year from the Goburigan war, leaving all fearing of futility, without a way out. Then, suggested by the ruling Emperor was a major cross country AERORACE to revive the country and to commemorate the first anniversary of winning the war.[1]

Kingdom Grandprix Regulations

  1. Head for the goal despite the means
  2. Eliminate any intruder!
  3. The winner gets a lump sum prize and anything they shall desire!

Characters

There are a total of eight characters to choose from:

  • Gain, the Fighter
  • Chitta, the Witch
  • Miyamoto, the Samurai
  • Bornnam, the Necromancer
  • Nirvana, the Huge Fairy
  • Kickle & Laycle, the Kids
  • Honest John, the Automatic Armor
  • Bul-Gin, the Captain Goblin

Power Ups

  • P increases main shot power
  • B increases bomb stock by 1
  • H increases Homing Shot power, or switches to Homing Shot
  • F increases Forward Shot power, or switches to Forward Shot

When collecting the same power up as the type the player currently possesses, the power will be increased. Picking up the opposite power up will switch powers at the current power level.

Gameplay

The game centers around the annual race, known as the Kingdom Grandprix. Players control their ships as a standard shooter. There are two buttons, the A button fires the player's shot when pressed rapidly and the B button fires the player's bomb. Holding down the shot button will give the player a speed boost, at the expense of not being able to fire. Firing the bomb with opponents on screen will paralyze them for a few seconds.

Players have a limited ability to select stages. The first stage is always the same; subsequent stages allow the player to select one of two possible stages. For the final stage, players have three options from which to choose.

At the end of each stage, points are awarded based on position. The winner of the stage earns 9 points, second earns 6, third earns 3, fourth earns 1, and fifth through eighth earn 0. Points are accumulated over the six stages. If the player survives to the end of the race, the character with the most overall points wins the race. If the player wins the race, the player will enter the second loop. In the second loop, players will race the stages not selected in the first loop. The first stage is played again as the first stage in the second loop, albeit with a palette swap, meaning that one of the three possible final stages will not be played in a complete game.

It is, in theory, possible to beat the game without firing a shot; the game cares only if the player wins the race at the end. In practice, however, the feat is impossible.
