Jaleco, formerly Japan Leisure Co., Ltd (renamed in April 1983) released the Pony Mark II 18" model in October 1985 (see in Gallery), predating the 1986 Sega City and SNK Candy 18 cabinets by several months. It featured an optional extension pedestal base module which could convert the existing sitdown into an upright, adding 27.5cm height to the initial 100cm and weighing on its own 15kg. The conversion at 1275mm really just made it a Mini Upright (a taller Sitdown), not a true Upright per se, just like Sega City and SNK Candy 18 cabinets would later also add a similar optional riser module following Jaleco's example.

The Medal Pony in the mk II series was an upright variant cabinet that did not use the riser pedestal module unlike the lengthened regular mk II 18" converted sitdown, and had different dimensions overall : 720mm depth x 560mm width x 1590mm height, 78kg, 110W power.

The designer chose to aim specifically for an adult, urban clientele with an arcade cabinet design meant to match via a monochrome and metallic modern look, the atmosphere and style of 1985's Roppongi district in Tokyo, Japan (see interview below), in order to break with the usual run of the mill boxy dagashiya type bright colored wooden cabinets which often lacked style and served mere function, meant to attract a larger public and especially children.

Jaleco's amusing engrish motto features on the right side of the backlit marquee : "We Present You Fantastic Time"
