The Taito Vewlix L (ビュウリックス L) is a 32-inch LCD sitdown arcade cabinet introduced by Taito in 2008 as a lower-cost version of the original Vewlix F.

Taito described the L as the new standard model of the Vewlix range, retaining the basic design and functionality of the original F while reducing the purchase cost through a simplified standard equipment specification.

The cabinet uses a 32-inch widescreen LCD, JVS wiring and the same basic 798 mm-square footprint as the Vewlix F.

Design

The Vewlix L retains the characteristic Vewlix construction introduced with the Vewlix F:

  • 32-inch widescreen LCD
  • Sitdown control-panel height
  • 798 × 798 mm cabinet footprint
  • Detachable side panels
  • Interchangeable control panels
  • Large upper instruction-panel area
  • Stereo speaker system
  • JVS wiring
  • Optional JAMMA compatibility
  • Horizontally or vertically mounted LCD

Taito described the monitor height, viewing distance and control-panel position as having been selected with player ergonomics in mind.

The L therefore shares the fundamental Vewlix cabinet architecture rather than representing a substantially different cabinet design.

Release

The Vewlix L appeared in Taito's 2008 Vewlix range alongside the existing Vewlix F and the new Vewlix VS.

Contemporary Japanese amusement-industry coverage described the F as the flagship model, the L as the lower-priced model and the VS as the dedicated versus cabinet.

Taito's promotional material describes the L as:

VEWLIX Fの製品コンセプト・基本性能をそのまま引き継ぎながらコストダウンを実現した次世代汎用筐体のスタンダードモデル

Broadly:

A standard next-generation general-purpose cabinet which retains the product concept and basic performance of the Vewlix F while achieving a lower cost.

Monitor

The Vewlix L uses a 32-inch widescreen LCD.

The cabinet supports both:

  • 16:9 widescreen video
  • Traditional 4:3 arcade video

The monitor can also be physically installed in either horizontal or vertical orientation.

There is no built-in rotation mechanism. Changing orientation requires the LCD assembly to be removed and repositioned manually.

The native resolution generally associated with the original Vewlix L LCD is:

1366 × 768

The standard L monitor differed from the premium high-speed LCD supplied as standard in the Vewlix F.

Taito's 2008 option chart lists the Vewlix high-speed LCD panel as:

  • Standard equipment on the Vewlix F
  • Optional on the Vewlix L
  • Optional on the Vewlix VS

A surviving cabinet may therefore contain either its original L panel or a later replacement / upgraded display.

Differences from Vewlix F

The Vewlix L was primarily intended as a more economical version of the Vewlix F.

Taito's factory comparison literature shows that several items included as standard with the F became optional on the L.

Feature Vewlix F Vewlix L
32-inch widescreen LCD Standard Standard
High-speed LCD panel Standard Optional
New JAMMA power kit Standard Optional
Display-card base kit Standard Optional
Type X2 versus kit Optional Optional
2J14B control panel Optional, F colour Optional
2P joint harness Optional Optional

The principal distinction is therefore equipment level rather than cabinet dimensions or fundamental construction.

Wiring

The Vewlix L is fundamentally a JVS cabinet.

Taito also offered an optional JAMMA conversion system allowing conventional JAMMA PCBs to be installed.

Depending on operator configuration, a cabinet may contain:

  • Taito JVS I/O
  • Taito Fast I/O
  • JVS power supply
  • JAMMA conversion kit
  • New JAMMA power kit
  • NESiCA card reader
  • Taito card reader
  • Versus-link hardware

These should not all be assumed to have been installed in every cabinet.

Power

Taito's 2008 Vewlix F / L / VS comparison brochure gives the Vewlix L specification as:

  • Power supply: AC100V, 50/60Hz
  • Power consumption: 270 W
  • Maximum current: 2.9 A
  • Weight: approximately 105 kg

The cabinet's lower weight compared with the F reflects differences in standard equipment and internal specification.

Dimensions

Specification Vewlix L
Width 798 mm
Depth 798 mm
Height without instruction panel approximately 1575 mm
Height including instruction panel approximately 1890 mm
Weight approximately 105 kg
Monitor 32-inch widescreen LCD
Native resolution 1366 × 768
Power AC100V, 50/60Hz
Power consumption 270 W
Maximum current 2.9 A

Control panels

The Vewlix L uses the interchangeable Vewlix control-panel system.

Factory options included conventional joystick/button layouts and panels intended for later Taito arcade systems.

Taito's comparison literature specifically lists a VL Control Panel 2J14B as compatible with the L.

Control panels can be removed independently of the rest of the cabinet for servicing or replacement.

Monitor rotation

The LCD can be installed either horizontally or vertically.

Unlike CRT cabinets such as the Taito Egret II, there is no built-in monitor rotation mechanism.

To rotate the screen, the cabinet side trim and monitor mounting hardware must be removed before the LCD panel is withdrawn and repositioned.

Because replacement LCDs and aftermarket monitor conversions are common, the precise procedure can vary between surviving cabinets.

Components

Depending on configuration, a Vewlix L may contain:

These are configuration-dependent rather than universal equipment.

Factory options

Taito's 2008 Vewlix comparison literature lists the following equipment as available for the L:

  • Vewlix high-speed LCD panel
  • Vewlix JAMMA kit
  • Vewlix New JAMMA power kit
  • Taito Type X2 versus kit
  • VL 2J14B control panel
  • Vewlix display-card base kit
  • 2P joint harness

This modular approach allowed operators to buy the lower-cost L cabinet and add equipment only where required.

Relationship to other Vewlix cabinets

The Vewlix L forms part of the early Vewlix range alongside:

The F was the higher-specification flagship model, while the L was intended as the more economical general-purpose version.

The VS used two opposed player positions and was specifically configured for versus play.

Later Vewlix variants included:

Notes

  • Insert coin sticker is approximately 65 × 85 mm.
  • Original Vewlix L cabinets are frequently modified with replacement LCDs, different I/O boards and aftermarket power supplies.
  • A surviving cabinet should therefore not automatically be assumed to retain its original factory specification.
