Tecmo Sound Lava Excel, released in 1987 alongside the Sound Lava Economy, differed from the latter as the Excel had a central column placed right in the middle below the control panel, dedicated to the coin mech, in a very western/overseas style, just like the rest of the design. Tecmo claims this addition was compact enough to not be in the least cumbersome for the player(s). The Economy instead had a footrest steel bar fixed on a bottom extension of the cabinet, extension which is absent in the Excel.
Excel & Economy models had the exact same specs apart from the coin chute column & footrest.
Sound Lava models had a peculiar shader hood, under which, right above the glass plate, were located 2 stereo "high quality, superior sound" speakers (specs undisclosed yet); affixed on one internal side of said hood, a game instructions/how-to-play leaflet could be found on a hinged transparent plastic case which could remain folded on the side or displaced for the player(s) to consult anytime (see ads & flyer in Gallery below).
The Sound Lava registered design evolved a couple years later when Tecmo produced the Urban, derived more from the Economy rather than from the Excel.
