Two years after the release of the Sound Lava cabinets, Tecmo (formerly Tehkan) ditched the coin column of the Sound Lava Excel and instead focused on the Sound Lava Economy design, updating it into the 1989 Tecmo Urban (said to have hit the market in July 1989 according to Game Machine) to conform to the newer preferences emerging in japanese arcade venues, all while keeping a wooden cabinet format and an overall design with a very large footrest reminiscent of american and european cabinets with a very japanese header style.

The peculiar graphics on the sides were inspired by Sega Aero City color variants, while the Urban's control panel theme mimicks the graphics seen on Taito Darius' dedicated japanese cabinet individual control panels.

Several european cabinets blending aspects of the Urban and its predecessor Sound Lava Economy appeared shortly after, due to the affinity of the design with local cabinets.
