The Vortex Arcade Mini Cute Clone is a modern reproduction of Capcom's Capcom Cute marketed by Vortex Arcade.

The cabinet follows the external design of the original Capcom machine but uses newly manufactured cabinet components and modern replacement CRT hardware.

Unlike the earlier TRFightstick Mini Cute Clone, the Vortex version is supplied with an 18-inch CRT monitor and monitor chassis.

Manufacturer

The cabinet is marketed by Vortex Arcade.

It is a modern reproduction and is not a Capcom-manufactured or Capcom-licensed cabinet.

The Vortex cabinet forms part of the wider family of Mini Cute reproductions which appeared as original Capcom Cute cabinets became increasingly scarce and expensive.

Dimensions

The Vortex cabinet is documented at approximately:

  • Width: 500 mm
  • Depth: 690 mm
  • Height: 1300 mm
  • Weight: 60 kg

These specifications should not automatically be applied to other Mini Cute reproduction versions.

Monitor

The Vortex reproduction is fitted with an 18-inch / approximately 47 cm CRT.

The cabinet uses a revised monitor chassis supplied with the reproduction.

The display operates at standard 15 kHz arcade resolution.

The monitor can be installed horizontally or vertically.

There is no dedicated rotation mechanism, but the relatively small CRT and self-contained monitor/chassis frame make manual rotation considerably easier than on many larger candy cabinets.

Monitor rotation

The following procedure applies to the documented Vortex Arcade version.

Connections and mounting arrangements may differ on other Mini Cute reproductions.

  • Unplug the cabinet from the mains.
  • Remove the rear panel.
  • Disconnect the two-pin fan connector.
  • Disconnect the nine-pin monitor connector and remove the cable from any cable-management clips.
  • Confirm that the monitor and chassis assembly is no longer electrically connected to the cabinet.
  • Remove the four bolts securing the monitor frame to the cabinet.
  • Take care not to lose the clear rubber washers fitted with the mounting bolts.
  • Remove the monitor assembly from the cabinet.
  • Ideally place the monitor safely outside the cabinet before rotating it, as this makes it easier to grip correctly when reinstalling.
  • Rotate the monitor assembly to the required orientation.
  • Carefully reinstall the monitor.
  • Refit the four mounting bolts and rubber washers.
  • Remove the plastic monitor bezel by carefully flexing it free.
  • Rotate the bezel to match the new monitor orientation.
  • Refit the bezel.
  • Reconnect the nine-pin monitor connector.
  • Check that no cables have been trapped, stretched or disconnected.
  • Reconnect the cooling fan where required.
  • Refit and secure the rear panel.

Because CRT monitors contain potentially dangerous voltages, appropriate CRT safety procedures should be followed whenever working inside the cabinet.

Construction

The Vortex reproduction is supplied as a substantially complete cabinet.

Known features include:

  • 18-inch CRT
  • Monitor chassis
  • Removable monitor/chassis frame
  • JAMMA wiring
  • Cooling fan
  • Two-player control panel
  • Capcom Cute-style reproduction artwork

Internal hardware may change between production runs, so owners should confirm the exact components fitted to their own cabinet.

Controls

The cabinet uses a compact two-player control panel based on the original Capcom Cute.

Control-panel hole positions may not match genuine Capcom Cute artwork exactly.

When ordering replacement control-panel overlays, an uncut version is preferable where available.

Artwork

Artwork based on the original Capcom Cute is fitted to the reproduction.

Several aftermarket suppliers produce replacement:

  • Side artwork
  • Speaker decals
  • Coin-reject surround
  • Control-panel overlays
  • Warning labels

Although reproduction artwork designed for the genuine Cute may physically fit, joystick and button holes should be checked before using pre-cut control-panel overlays.
